Bongs vs. Dab Rigs: Their Differences Compared
A lot of comparison articles contrast two things that have very little in common with each other. This isn’t one of those articles. We’re not comparing apples and oranges here, instead, we’re comparing bongs and dab rigs. Two types of glass pipes designed to achieve the same fundamental end (you getting high) and which look so similar people constantly mistake one for the other when they enter our Parker headshop. So let’s get to it.
What is a Bong?
A bong is the classic cannabis water pipe descended from the hookahs of old that is renowned for its ability to produce monster hits off of dry cannabis while protecting your throat and lungs from the heat and other byproducts associated with combustion. Bongs range in height from 6 inches or so to a foot and a half or more and are anchored at their base by a water chamber through which smoke from the burning cannabis passes.
What is a Dab Rig?
A visit to our Parker smoke shop will reveal that dab rigs closely resemble bongs. They hit all the same design beats as a bong: water chamber, neck, mouthpiece, downstem, etc. but instead of a bowl where you would burn dry cannabis, there is a “nail” or “banger” which you heat up before adding some concentrate. The concentrate vaporizes, you inhale through the mouthpiece just like a bong and the vapor passes through the water removing impurities, just like a bong.
How are Bongs and Dab Rigs Similar?
- Both are primarily made from glass
- They share most design components
- Both have water chambers to filter the smoke or vapor
- Both are designed to facilitate your buzz
How are Bongs and Dab Rigs Different?
- The bong is used for smoking dry flower, the dab rig for vaporizing concentrates
- Dab rigs require both a banger or nail and a dome cap
- Bongs use a simple removable bowl
- A lighter or match can be used with a bong, a dab rig will require a torch
Considerations When Choosing a Bong or Dab Rig
Both bongs and dab rigs are big sellers here at the Smoking Buddha pipe shop. If you can’t decide which one is right for you here are a few things to consider:
- Size: Some dab rigs are big and heavy but a basic dab rig tends to be smaller than a basic bong.
- Smoke or vapor: This is a matter of personal taste. Some prefer smoking, some prefer vaping.
- Portability: There are small bongs that travel well. Dab rigs, however, are designed for home use.
- Price: Due to their more complex and compelling designs dab rigs often cost more.
The Bottom Line
Both a dab rig and a bong will deliver an outstanding buzz and that, after all, is what it’s all about.
